Rare arts and Crafts Compton Pottery Figure of St Michael by Mary Seton Watts.
A rare and highly collected example of an Arts and Crafts Compton pottery figure of St Michael by Mary Seton Watts.
St Michael the Archangel is depicted wearing full plate mail armour with his flaming sword in his left hand pointing downwards whilst his right hand holds the scales of justice above his breast plate, all beautifully framed by his angels wings.
A well potted example that has been painted extremely well with further gilt highlights to his halo.
Importantly there is little or no loss to the paintwork where usually there is significant losses due to the nature of the soft white body and tempera egg based paint work. There is a small loss to the top of the sword above his right hand, there are two very small chips to the front edge of the plinth together with a few small chips and grazes in places (see photos).
Compton was sold in several London shops, including Liberty & Co and the Guild was involved with the garden designer Gertrude Jeckyll.
Size: 22cm tall with impressed Compton “PAG" wheel mark to the base.
Circa: 1900.
Condition: In good original condition.
