Large Poole Pottery Studio Black Clay Atlantis table lamp by Guy Sydenham.

 

A fantastic and substantial Poole Pottery Studio Atlantis ‘Black Clay’ table lamp by Guy Sydenham.

 

A large lamp of bulbous form with elliptical aperture, the interior is glazed in orange, the exterior glazed in vibrant deep green and black ‘leopard skin’ markings.

 

The lamp retains its original light fittings including wire and in-line switch which remains in working order, there are vents to the back top of the lamp as shown allowing heat to escape from the light bulb.

 

Incised with GS monogram and Poole England stamp.

 

See photo of Guy Sydenham working at the Poole studio, surrounded by comparable lamps from the 1960s, these lamps were reputedly sold through Heals of Tottenham Court Road in London.

 

Size: A substantial 30cm high weighing 3.5kg.

 

Condition: In excellent original condition and in full working order.

 

This is an iconic futuristic design demonstrating Guy Sydenham’s fascination with abstract ocean forms. Being a useful lamp and made from ‘Black Clay’ adds further to its desirability, Woolley & Wallis auctions sold a mermaid example of this lamp back in 2005 with an estimate £6-8k.
