CHRISTOPHER DRESSER FOR WATCOMBE POTTERY CO. TORQUAY TERRACOTTA JUG, c.1872
A rare and good example of a Watcombe Pottery Co. Aesthetic Movement Terracotta Jug with gold decoration designed by Dr Christopher Dresser.
Of angular form with three serrated bands, the jug is finely modelled with great attention to detail, exhibiting Dresser's trademark angular handle and is substantial in size (20cm high). It is a particularly rare & fine example of Devon/Torquay Ware exhibiting gold coloured decoration around all three serrated bands, the handle and both the interior and exterior of the rim.
Marks: It is fully marked to the base with printed "Watcome Torquay" and registered diamond mark (Clayware, Batch 6, 3rd June 1872).
Size: H20cm x D16cm x W14cm
Condition: In excellent original condition. For completeness there are three inconsequential nicks to the side of the handle.
